Against fortress Europe: Solidarity with refugees instead of police batons
Join us to declare disagreement with the violation of international law and inhuman treatment of refugees on the Polish-Belarusian border.
Lukashenko’s regime took cynically advantage of hopelessness of people fleeing to escape suffering and war at the Middle East, and their hope for a secure life in Europe, for his own political game. However, the situation itself where an authoritarian uses refugees as a weapon, is enabled by long-time inhuman migrant and asylum policy of the EU.
Poland accepted the conditions set by Lukashenko, where refugees are only chessmen on a chessboard. In a reaction they closed 400 kilometres long border with Belarus and declared state of emergency in the adjacent regions. Massive militarization followed and refugees, whom Polish armed forces arrested were returned to the forests on Belarusian border without the possibility to ask for an asylum.
The death of at least 12 refugees (one of them being toddler) caused by frost, hunger and exhaustion is confirmed. Two people drowned in the border river Bug. Those people are let to die by a member state of the EU. The very EU which was in 2012 awarded by Nobel Peace Prize. The EU wants to subsequently legalize the violation of international law by Poland by accepting new “Schengen Act”. Newly, the member state will be allowed to physically push refugees out of their territory if they are labelled as a “hybrid threat”.
What was the reaction of Czech politicians? ODS, which is the future leading party of the government appealed to Babiš resigned government to offer help Poland by dispatching police forces. However, such cynic approach is not a surprise from a party, whose leader posed for a photo in front of Orban’s border fence. Nevertheless, the appeal was supported by some politicians of centrist STAN.
Disgusting games with human lives need to end. We demand unconditional admission of part of the refugees by the Czech Republic. It is necessary to put international pressure upon Poland to immediate opening of the border regions for humanitarian organisations, medics, and journalists.
